JAMB Biology: what to revise when you cannot revise everything

Biology is the subject where candidates read the most and score the least, because volume of reading is not the same as volume of recall.

Where the questions concentrate

  • Cell biology: structure, organelles and their functions, cell division.
  • Genetics: Mendelian ratios, sex linkage, blood groups, simple crosses.
  • Ecology: food chains and webs, energy flow, nutrient cycles, adaptation, and the population terms that get confused with one another.
  • Nutrition, transport, respiration and excretion across plants and animals.
  • Reproduction, in both plants and humans.
  • Classification, which candidates find dull and JAMB asks about anyway.
  • Evolution and the standard named theories.

Everything here sits inside the official JAMB Biology syllabus, which changes very little from year to year, so there is no need to wait for the 2027 edition before you start. What is confirmed for 2027 so far is in our JAMB 2027 update.

Genetics is the section that rewards practice fastest

Unlike most of Biology, genetics questions are procedural: set up the cross, work the ratio, read the answer. A candidate who drills twenty genetics questions will be reliably better at the twenty-first. That is not true of, say, classification. If your time is limited and your genetics is shaky, start there.

Diagrams are a question type, not decoration

Labelled diagrams appear every year: the cell, the heart, the nephron, the eye, the flower, the digestive system. Learn them by drawing them from memory and then checking, rather than by looking at them repeatedly. Looking at a diagram produces a strong feeling of familiarity and very little recall — which is exactly the trap of this subject.

Handling the sheer volume

Biology's syllabus is too long to hold in fresh memory by reading it once. What works is spaced retrieval: cover material, get tested on it, leave it, get tested again a week later. The second and third testings are where it sticks. Any system that asks you questions over time beats any system that presents you information over time.

Precision of language

Biology answers hinge on exact terms, and the distractors are built from near-misses — transpiration and translocation, mitosis and meiosis, osmosis and diffusion, habitat and niche. When you meet a pair you have ever confused, write both definitions side by side. That pairing is where the examiner is aiming.

Questions people ask

Where do JAMB Biology questions concentrate?

Cell biology including organelles and cell division, genetics, ecology, nutrition, transport, respiration and excretion across plants and animals, reproduction, classification, and evolution with the standard named theories.

Which Biology topic improves fastest with practice?

Genetics. Unlike most of Biology it is procedural: set up the cross, work the ratio, read the answer. A candidate who drills twenty genetics questions will be reliably better at the twenty-first, which is not true of classification.

How should I learn Biology diagrams?

By drawing them from memory and then checking, rather than by looking at them repeatedly. Labelled diagrams appear every year, including the cell, the heart, the nephron, the eye, the flower and the digestive system. Looking at a diagram produces a strong feeling of familiarity and very little recall.

How do I handle the volume of the Biology syllabus?

Spaced retrieval. The syllabus is too long to hold in fresh memory by reading it once, so cover material, get tested on it, leave it, and get tested again a week later. The second and third testings are where it sticks: any system that asks you questions over time beats any system that presents you information over time.

Why do I lose Biology marks on topics I know?

Precision of language. Answers hinge on exact terms and the distractors are built from near-misses such as transpiration and translocation, mitosis and meiosis, osmosis and diffusion, habitat and niche. When you meet a pair you have ever confused, write both definitions side by side.

Practise this, don't just read it. Recall is trained by being asked, not by reading. That is exactly what a question bank does. JAMBUDDY gives you timed mocks and 20,000+ real past questions inside Telegram, free for 14 days. Open @jamb_buddy_bot.
