Revise in order of yield
Work through several years of past papers and the same areas dominate: number and numeration, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, and statistics with probability. Calculus appears but carries less weight than candidates fear, and it is usually the standard differentiation and integration operations rather than anything exotic.
If your time is short, cover them in that order. It is not that the later topics do not matter; it is that the earlier ones pay more per hour spent.
Everything here sits inside the official JAMB Mathematics syllabus, which changes very little from year to year, so there is no need to wait for the 2027 edition before you start. What is confirmed for 2027 so far is in our JAMB 2027 update.
The specific things that come up again and again
- Number bases, conversions and arithmetic within a base.
- Indices, logarithms and surds — almost always present, almost always quick marks once the rules are automatic.
- Quadratics: roots, sum and product of roots, forming an equation from given roots.
- Variation, direct, inverse, joint and partial.
- Mensuration: areas, volumes, surface areas of the standard solids.
- Trigonometric ratios and the sine and cosine rules.
- Statistics: mean, median, mode, and reading grouped frequency tables.
- Probability, mostly single events and simple combinations.
Speed is a topic in itself
Mathematics questions vary enormously in how long they take, and every one is worth the same. A candidate who methodically solves everything in order will leave marks on the table. Learn to recognise, in a few seconds, whether a question is a thirty-second item or a three-minute one, and order your work accordingly.
Practise mental arithmetic deliberately. There is no calculator, and candidates who are slow at basic computation lose time on every single question rather than on a few.
Working backwards from the options
It is a multiple-choice paper, and that is a tool. Substituting the given options into an equation is often faster than solving it, particularly for quadratics and for questions involving awkward fractions. Estimation eliminates obviously wrong options in geometry and mensuration. Neither is cheating — the exam asks for the right answer, not a particular method.
How to review a wrong answer
Sort every mistake into one of three bins: I did not know the method, I knew it and slipped, or I misread the question. Each needs a different fix, and most candidates who plateau are treating all three as if they were the first. Slips are fixed by slowing down at specific moments; misreads are fixed by underlining what is asked before working.
Questions people ask
Which JAMB Mathematics topics carry the most weight?
Number and numeration, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, and statistics with probability. Calculus appears but carries less weight than candidates fear, and it is usually standard differentiation and integration rather than anything exotic.
Which specific topics come up again and again?
Number bases, indices, logarithms and surds, quadratics including sum and product of roots, variation, mensuration, trigonometric ratios with the sine and cosine rules, statistics from grouped frequency tables, and probability of single events and simple combinations.
Is a calculator allowed in JAMB Mathematics?
No, which is why mental arithmetic is worth practising deliberately. Candidates who are slow at basic computation lose time on every single question rather than on a few.
Do I have to solve every question properly?
No. It is a multiple-choice paper and that is a tool, so substituting the given options can be faster than solving. Every question is worth the same, so learn to recognise within a few seconds whether an item is a thirty-second one or a three-minute one.
